introducing

3 steps

Following on from the success of our award winning film, ‘The Rich and The Pure’, Unleashed Community Drama present their second short film ‘3 Steps’, which unashamedly shines a spotlight on the whole issue of homelessness. Having worked closely with the ex-homeless and recovery community of Torbay for almost a decade, Unleashed Community Drama presents the true story of four real homeless people, with the sole aim of bringing real understanding to the issue of homelessness and dispelling the bigotry and hatred that many folk who have lost everything have to endure.

welcome to the

unleashed theatre company

Welcome to Unleashed Theatre Company’s brand new website. I cannot believe that it was over twenty years ago we performed our very first production, when a rag bag of disparate actors stepped on to the stage at The Little Theatre in Torquay to perform a modern dress version of St John’s Gospel.

Over the subsequent years we performed many productions such as “The Hiding Place” and “Walkout”, with a message of hope. As a result in 2009 we were commissioned by Buckfast Abbey to produce their summer outreach production, which we did for the next ten years and it was during this period we officially became Unleashed Theatre Company.

In 2014 we launched Unleashed Community Drama a theatre group specifically for folk who were either homeless or on a 12 step programme. This group meets every week, 51 weeks of the year and has grown into an inspirational community of actors all on a journey of recovery together. Two years ago we launched Unleashed Community Choir for the very same community.

We hope this site will give you a real insight into our vision and purpose:  a community that seeks to ‘unleash the potential within’ of anyone who’s welcome to join us.

Congratulations once again to Unleashed Theatre Company for another excellent production at the Royal Lyceum Theatre: Alan Bennett's 'The Lady In The Van'.On entering the auditorium and seeing the detailed layout on the stage it was immediately noticeable that imagination, skill and effort has gone in to presenting the play, though the piece-de-resistance was still to be revealed. Thanks go to all the team of unsung heroes who designed, built and managed the set and props. The unseen technical team also needs noting, the lighting carried the focus and the changing mood across the wide expanse of stage and the use of digital technology blended in well, adding layers to the story.Everyone familiar with Unleashed knows that their mission is to focus attention on social issues; though the messages are serious their approach combines poignancy and pathos with touches of humour. The cast on this occasion carried it of with great skill. The dual personality of the author was cleverly achieved and all of the additional personalities played their part in carrying the story along, but, even though it's a little unfair to single out any one actor, I feel that it should not go unsaid that the strength of Alexa Tewkesbury's performance was remarkable. It's a long play, and a very wordy play and the lady in the van had a very emotionally challenging role which she was unfaltering in delivering. If you are reading this on Saturday, if you haven't already seen it, you have one last chance this evening. ...
